Frequently Asked Questions
Does my Tarrant County vehicle need an emissions test?
Yes, if your vehicle is registered in Tarrant County and meets Texas emissions-testing requirements. Generally, gasoline-powered vehicles that are 2–24 years old require an annual emissions inspection. Diesel vehicles, electric vehicles, motorcycles, and mopeds are generally exempt from emissions testing
Are commercial vehicles still required to pass a safety inspection?
Yes. Texas eliminated mandatory safety inspections for most non-commercial vehicles beginning January 1, 2025, but commercial vehicles must still pass an annual commercial safety inspection. Depending on the vehicle and its registration, an emissions inspection may also be required.
What happens if my vehicle fails emissions testing?
If your vehicle fails, you’ll receive information about the reason for the failure. You can have the necessary repairs performed and return for a reinspection. Some vehicles may qualify for a waiver or time extension if specific eligibility and repair requirements are met.
How long does an inspection usually take?
Most vehicle inspections can be completed fairly quickly, although the exact time depends on the type of inspection, your vehicle, and whether any issues are found. We recommend allowing approximately 30–60 minutes for a routine inspection.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring your vehicle, a valid form of identification, and proof of current Texas auto insurance. If you’re returning for a reinspection, bring your previous inspection report and any relevant repair documentation.
